Legal Counsel

Job Description

The Legal Assistant will provide guidance and assistance towards the project- and bid-managers within the company, in close conjunction with the management, and will review and prepare the necessary contractual documents to achieve the goals and to protect the legal interests of the company. He/she will contribute to smooth contractual dialogues with customers and suppliers.  He/she will develop efficient contractual templates and policies and will support the management in maintaining legal compliance within the contracts executed.

The Legal Assistant reports to the Finance & Contracts Director. He/she will be able to work autonomously and will be able to plan his/her work adequately supporting several stakeholders within the company.


Write, review and negotiate contracts in close conjunction with the management.  Assign priorities and carry out general legal support improvement actions.

Write, review and coordinate the signature process of contracts

  • Understand the
    • project technical objective and scope
    • project development plan and deliverable items
    • financial requirements of the project
    • partner's/counterpart's contractual needs and limitations
  • Write and review the contract
    • Conduct project team interviews and eventually interviews with the management
    • Draft contract proposals / review Non-Disclosure Agreements, ESA/EU Research & Development contracts, commercial delivery contracts
    • propose, argument and implement contractual improvements
    • verify specific legal questions and exchange lessons learned at OHB SE group-level
    • Implement changes
  • Negotiate the contract
    • Highlight the key aspects that require specific attention
    • Differentiate between less and more important points
    • Try to establish a consensus between all parties
    • Finalize the contract for signature
  • Develop relations with the internal stakeholders, customers and suppliers
  • Monitor the reputation of the company in the contractual discussions with customers

Develop the contractual/legal competencies of Antwerp Space

  • Develop contract templates
  • Develop negotiation strategies together with the management
  • Increase our knowledge in specific aspects (GCC, BIPR, consortium agreements, …)
  • Organize internal trainings (lessons learned & evaluation)

Enable the proper execution of projects during their acquisition

  • Challenge the engineers to fully understand the risks that the project contains

Organize the legal department and guarantee a quality service to managers, employees and customers

  • Support managers and project teams throughout the proposal, negotiation and execution phase
  • Be the point of contact for contract discussions with customers and suppliers
  • Define a framework for collecting lessons learned and precedent agreements made with the customers and suppliers
  • Maintain a helicopter view across all contracts under preparation/negotiation
  • Report on a monthly base the status of all contracts under preparation/negotiation

Job Experience

  • Master Degree in International and/or European Law
  • First working experience as a legal assistant in an International and/or European organization
  • First experience in working with businesses

Job Competences

  • Understanding and knowledge of international law and policies
  • Good reading and writing skills in English, French and German are a plus
  • Capable to propose, argument and implement contractual improvements
  • Good knowledge in working with legal and regulatory standards in bigger organizations; practical knowledge in establishing external and internal compliance to policies and practices; solid negotiation skills;
  • Service-minded, pro-active person with an eye for detail, thorough and careful.
  • Good advisory skills working closely with management; can work with managers on an equal basis
  • Good communication and listening skills, accessible and easy going in personal contacts, a person of trust who is aware of his partner's/counterpart's contractual needs and limitations.
  • Hands-on and willing to deal with contracts administration
  • No-nonsense mentality, energetic, engaged
  • Team-player
  • Eligible for a work permit in Belgium
